It’s not just about fun and games… every year, we also like to spend some quality time raising money for a good cause.
It is with great pleasure that are able to announce a fantastic local organization as our charity beneficiary for our 2025 convention’s annual Bob May Memorial Charity Auction: Cancer Support Community Los Angeles (CSCLA).
For more than 40 years, Cancer Support Community Los Angeles has provided free, no-cost culturally competent and linguistically accessible psychosocial cancer care for all Los Angeles cancer patients and their loved ones. Led by licensed mental health professionals, our programs and services are focused on the physical and mental health, long-term resilience, and survivorship of cancer patients—of all ages, ethnicities, genders, and diagnoses, and at any stage—as well as their families and loved ones. CSCLA serves an average of 2,300 community members annually through about 100 virtual and in-person programs each month, including counseling, support groups (including for Spanish and Korean speakers), healthy lifestyle classes, education workshops, social events, and more.
You can find out more details about them at cancersupportla.org.
As always, 100% of the proceeds of our charity auction are given to the year’s charity beneficiary.
So many of us at Gallifrey One, and so many of our attendees, have had their lives touched by cancer, which has claimed the lives of many of our loved ones. We’ve wanted to support a local cancer charity for some time, and are thrilled to be able to support CSCLA this year at our convention.
This year’s annual auction will take place on Sunday, February 16, 2025 starting at noon. On Friday and Saturday, our Auction Donation Room will be open taking merchandise donations that will be put up for auction; your contributions are welcome (see below for details).
About the Bob May Memorial Charity Auction
The Bob May Memorial Charity Auction, Gallifrey One’s annual charity event, has raised over $250,000 for charity over the years for some very worthy causes, including the Foundation for the Study of Infant Death, the Downs Syndrome Association, the American Red Cross, the Dyslexia Scholarship Fund, the Hurricane Mitch Disaster Relief Fund, the War Child Charity, the Afghan Women’s Mission, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Association, the Starlight/Starbright Foundation, the American Heart Association, Actors and Others For Animals, the American Cancer Society, Direct Relief International, Pet Orphans of Southern California, Students Run LA, the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer, the Aimee Hoff Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Wounded Warrior Project, the LUMOS Foundation, the Denville Hall actors home, the Pop Culture Hero Coalition, the LASFS Building Fund, Project MotorHouse, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles, and in 2024, The Trevor Project.
Gallifrey One’s annual charity auction, which takes place Sunday afternoon at each year’s convention, is named in honor of our friend Bob May. Best known for playing the Robot on the 1960s television series Lost in Space, Bob was also part of our convention family — for over a decade, he was a mainstay at our convention as a programming guest, dealer, raconteur, and beloved auctioneer at our charity event. Since Bob’s passing in 2009, and with the gracious and continuing support of Bob’s family, the event has been perpetually dedicated to his memory, and the proceeds donated in his name.
An Important Note from Gallifrey One
Los Angeles, where the vast majority of the people working on this convention reside, has been dealing with incredible stress the past several weeks due to the fires that have ravaged our city. We all support the wonderful first responders and organizations that are working tirelessly to aid the victims of these tragic events. However, Gallifrey One was working with CSCLA before the fires began; it was in fact our intention to announce our choice of CSCLA on January 8 of this year… but then the fire storm started the day before the announcement was to go out. In deference to the victims of the fires, we decided to postpone our announcement of this year’s charity until after the worst was over. It was extremely important to us to honor our commitments to this very worthwhile and wonderful charity, especially in light of the fact that many charities suffer funding shortages when disasters strike (as attention is given elsewhere), so we are definitely thrilled to be able to give the proceeds of this year’s auction to CSCLA.
We Need Your Donations!
The Gallifrey One Bob May Charity Auction relies entirely upon donations of merchandise to auction for a good cause!
What are we looking for? In short: donations of science fiction, fantasy, comics, horror or genre related material, most especially Doctor Who and its spinoffs. This includes items from many different genres: a few examples include Torchwood, Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel Cinematic Universe/Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Harry Potter, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Supernatural, Game of Thrones, The Expanse, Stranger Things, Westworld, The Orville, The 100, The Prisoner, Blake’s 7, Outlander Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Red Dwarf and the myriad comics-related TV shows and films; as well as anything related to science fiction film and television, SF/fantasy literature, comic books, or collectibles. Anything that has a tangential relationship to the SF/fantasy/horror genre which is in at least very good condition. Autographed photos, commemorative items, one-time prints, illustrations, etc. are also welcome. If you find it to be a valuable collectible, chances are good that others will, too. Just be sure: this is not a disposal service for items you wish to throw away!
