Gallifrey 2010 will take place for the fifth year in a row at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott!
The Marriott at Los Angeles International Airport is a grand hotel with a terrific program/function space and great hotel amenities. The Marriott is located at 5855 West Century Boulevard, only a block away from LAX, accessible with complimentary shuttle from the airport. The hotel can be reached at 310-641-5700 or via fax at 310-337-5358. It's accessible via the 405 Freeway at the Century Boulevard/LAX Airport offramp, and is one of the hotels closest to the airport entrance. It's also approximately 20 miles from Bob Hope (Burbank) Airport and the Long Beach Municipal Airport, both of which are commercial airports.
Gallifrey 2010 has reserved the special room price of only $114.00/night -- reduced from the original $124 due to our date shift -- for our 2010 event. This is considerably cheaper than other hotels in the area (and in Los Angeles in general). Plenty of hotel rooms are available in our block, and you can now reserve rooms online. See the instructions below. To help the convention we urge you to book in the Marriott instead of any other local hotels!
Our facility has been used by many conventions, and is the annual home of several of our sister conventions such as Loscon, LA's regional science fiction convention, and Anime LA, a popular Japanese animation event. Our 2006 convention was our first year there, having left our previous home, the Airtel Plaza Hotel, after ten years. There is wireless internet access in the Marriott! The hotel also has a great swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, a FedEx copy center and three restaurants: the Champions Sports Bar, the Latitude 33 coffee shop and J.W.'s Steakhouse. And for added convenience, there's even a Starbucks coffee in the lobby open throughout the day.
You can use one of the following two ways to make your reservation, but we strongly urge you to do it through the Internet method:
- Suggested Option - Online Booking! Make your reservation online. This is the easiest way, and it's very easy to do:
- Browse directly to the Los Angeles Airport Marriott web page
- Enter your check-in and check-out dates, and under group code, type GALGALA - this is our Group Code for the convention
- Click on FIND button
- On the next page you'll see GALLIFREY ONE listed, at $114 per night; click RESERVE A ROOM to continue from there...
Note that using the internet option, you must use that Group Code in order to get the discount rate. Make certain that you are reserving at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott as there are several Marriott hotels in LA.
- Alternate Option: Call the hotel directly at 310-641-5700 or toll free at 800-228-9290 and ask for reservations. We suggest you use this instead of the main nationwide Marriott reservations number, as several of our members have encountered issues getting the group rate in previous years. Give them the GALGALA code if need be.
Air Travel
Visitors to Los Angeles may often be startled by the sheer size of our metropolitan area. The closest airport is the one most travelers will choose for obvious reasons: Los Angeles International Airport (also popularly known as "LAX" by its airport code), one of America's largest and busiest air terminals. All major US carriers and most international carriers fly to LAX, the world's fourth busiest airport. Virgin Atlantic is served by its own terminal (Terminal 2), while British Airways and most international carriers use the Tom Bradley International Terminal. LAX is also a major hub for United and American Airlines, both of which have their own terminals, but Southwest, Delta, Alaska, Continental and US Airways all use LAX as a frequent destination. Transcontinental rates aren't what people usually expect; even a trip between New York and LA can cost only $250 round trip if one checks for specials. While Gallifrey One used to be somewhat distant from this airport, we are now located approximately two minutes off the airport proper at the Marriott Hotel.
Note to LAX Travelers: When you exit the terminal at LAX, proceed to the hotel shuttle area; it's the median between the inner loop and the outer traffic circle. Look for the signs above the median.
About twenty miles north of us is Bob Hope Airport, formerly known as Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport. Bob Hope Airport is served primarily by regional carriers; Southwest, United, Alaska, America West and American Airlines all reach Burbank, but it can be a bit more expensive. International flights do not reach Bob Hope Airport. Still, it's a very easy airport to get in and out of, and serves as the San Fernando Valley's primary air terminal. You can often find great deals into Bob Hope Airport, and if you're already renting a car, this can be a decent option.
The Los Angeles region is also served by three additional commercial airports: Long Beach Municipal (approximately 15 miles from the Marriott), Ontario International Airport (approximately 50 miles) and John Wayne International/Orange County Airport (approximately 40 miles). All three are a great distance from the hotel and it's suggested you avoid them if you're not familiar with the area. (Exception: Long Beach is the western hub of JetBlue Airways, which can be a savings for those traveling from the East Coast.) Also, please note that Van Nuys Airport, next to our old home the Airtel Plaza Hotel, is not a commercial airport; it is used strictly by private aircraft and charter aviation.
Directions
For those driving locally the following are basic details to the hotel. If you are traveling from out of state by plane to the airports, it is suggested that you familiarize yourself with the LA map prior to departure.
- From North: I-405 South (or from central valley, I-5 south to I-405 south). Exit Century Boulevard/LAX Airport, approximately 2 miles west to hotel. Note: exit will drop you off on a side street; follow signs to Century Boulevard and turn right.
- From East (Inland Empire): I-10 or US-60 (I-10 merge) west to I-405 South, then follow directions for "From North," above.
- From South (Orange County, Beaches): I-405 north, exit Century Boulevard/LAX Airport, approximately 2 miles west to hotel.
Parking
Parking is available on site for a nominal fee. We will be validating daily visitors to the convention to reduce your parking cost, and overnight members will receive a discount on the parking fees (but you MUST tell them you are with the convention!) We will announce parking rates later in the year.
